2008 LAA
2008 LAA
Swindon's second Local Area Agreement was signed off in the month of June 2008. In selecting the priorities, contributing partners have considered how we tackle long-standing social, economic and environmental problems by working together to make our local populations lives better. Local issues include: reducing teenage pregnancy, cutting CO2 emissions, boosting employment skills, providing more affordable homes, reducing childhood obesity rates, and tackling crime.
This new LAA contains 16 targets on education attainment, and 30 local priorities selected from the Government's 198 indicator list.
From the beginning of 2008 the Borough Council's Partnership Team consulted with the themed blocks and strategic partners to produce the short list of indicators that have formed the 2008 LAA.
To move partnership working forward, a new fifth block has been established which includes growth and environmental sustainability issues for Swindon. Over the next twenty years we anticipate an extra 32,000 dwellings serving a total Swindon population of 225,000. This needs to be considered and completed in a fully sustainable manner in line with our adopted Climate Change objectives.
The Swindon Model
The Swindon Model outlines the approach used in Swindon to arrive at the priorities and their respective indicators to be included in the second round Local Area Agreement (LAA). The Model ensured an open and transparent process for managing stakeholder expectations whilst selecting the most relevant measures to be delivered through the agreement. The Government Office of the South West (GOSW) have described the approach as an 'exemplar' and 'strongly open and transparent'. More details on the application of the Swindon Model can be obtained from James Griffin, Head of Policy, at Swindon Borough Council at james.griffin@swindon.gov.uk
